In the early nineties, I was studying for my Mastersí and learning about the new and exciting world of non-linear editing. This, along with digital filmmaking and animation were profoundly exciting to me.
One of the first films I made was entitled, ěNobodyî. It was a very short film which combined super 8 film and digital video, which at the time was Hi-8. In making this film, I was assisted by my friend, Kristin Olness, who turned out be a great camera person. I had written a poem about the alienation and loneliness of life in the city and the transient fantasies that we have as we pass through the throngs of people while commuting on the subway.
As a part of our thesis requirement, we had to enter our work into various festivals and gallery presentations. I submitted ěNobodyî to the Cine Film Festival in Washington and not only was I accepted, I won a Cine Eagle Award for directing. This was not only the first time I had ever won anything, but it was also a great affirmation for my love of film and animation.
This page is dedicated to some of my favorite works. I invite you to preview some of these pieces and read my commentary regarding the tools used to create them and the challenges I experienced in making them.

Nobody, a film by Park Borchert |

 |

 |

Park Borchert |
 |
The concept behind "Nobody" was a poetic exploration of the loneliness and despair that one can feel even in a crowd. There seems to be a sociological irony inside all of us that is triggered by the awareness of being desolate. We gain a moroseness, which gives way to anger and bitterness toward those whom we do not know or even those we long to know. We, as psychological creatures, will play furtive games in our own minds, watching strangers we encounter and creating myths about them, which conform to our selfish passing fantasies. 1995 CINE EAGLE Award for directing. |

The St. Barnabas Health Care System was in partnership with
World Medical Leaders. This is one segment of a monthly series that we produced about the various topics,
which were important for the doctors, who worked in the New Jersey Healthcare system. These pieces, along
with daily medical news segments and symposia, were all produced in-house. This piece combines graphics
made with After Effects, Photoshop, Flash and edited in Final Cut Pro. |

Dr. Michael E. DeBakey |
 |
World Medical Leaders was one of the victims of the bursting
of the Dot.com bubble. WML was a pioneer in the online medical broadcasting industry. It was founded to
create a physicians-only Internet site where doctors from around the world could learn from and interact
with the most exceptional faculty of medical educators and thought leaders available.
World Medical Leaders gave its members access to original CME-certified lectures that were cutting-edge
material, carefully considered and presented in a clinical context for the practicing clinician and streaming on the internet. That doesn't sound difficult now, but in 1999 through 2003, with the bandwidth available, we had to work around the clock to make the files small enough to stream properly. There
seemed to be nothing we couldn't get done, except make a profit.

Billy and Bobby- The Hollywood Years |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
My dear and brilliant friend, Robb Pruitt, and the equally brilliant Bill Lobley, created the characters of Billy and Bobby. They are two old vaudeville aged
curmudgeons who wax judgmentally about the days gone by. The entire project (for me) was accomplished
with Photoshop, After Effects and Avid. All I really had to do was lay in the soundtrack and the
picture made itself, while I fell on the floor laughing. This was one of my favorite projects. It was the
winner at the New Haven FilmFest Award 1998, the Sarasota Comedy Festival Award in 1999 and the New York
Expo Board's Choice Award in 2000. It was also developed by NBC and AMC. |

 Elisha Kent Kane |
 |
Elisha Kent Kane was perhaps one of America's greatest explorers. Before the outbreak of the Civil War, he was arguably the most famous man in the country. Kane lead a
group to the Artic by ship to find the lost Franklin party in 1850 and again in 1853. This is a story of
bravery and sheer force of will that will fascinate any history buff. This was another Wolf Fang Production which was funded by the Elisha Kent Kane Historical Society. I edited this film on the Avid and pushed the early version of After Effects to the limit to get that Ken Burns feel. |

 Robb Pruitt |
 |
One of the blessings of my early career as a director and editor
was that everytime I turned around there was Robb Pruitt with another great project to work on. The truly
wonderful part was that when Robb and I work together, not only do we create a wonderful film, but we spend the entire time laughing. This Is Only A Test was no exception. Shot for Ramada Inns, this piece was a John Cleese-esque multiple choice quiz for the proper way to comport oneself when working
for Ramada Inns. You might call it a Goofus and Gallant industrial training film (for those of you who spent alot of time in the dentist office). This was shot on Hi-8 and edited on the Avid. |

Friars' Roast |

 |
 |

 |
 |
 |
The Friars Club is one of the truly great institutions of
New York City. I had the priviledge of being asked to shoot and edit one of its infamous roasts.
Roger Middleton, acclaimed voice over talent, best know for his mellifluent performance on the American Express Ads, was getting married and all his friends wanted to give him an irreverant send off. While his fellows tore him to shreads Matt Spewak and I shot from a locked down position and a hand held camera. The final edit was close to 2 hours, but this is a much shorter (and wholesome) version. The full version of this video features the talents of Gary Saulter, Sam Carter, Tim Kirkpatrick, Brian Carney, Lawton Paseka, Mike Hogan, Bob Kaliban, Kenny Fredrickson, "Craig Ronald, Robb Pruitt, Mel Boudrot, Jim Murtaugh, David Leary, Tucker Smith, and the guest of honor, Roger Middleton. |

The Raptor Trust of Millington, New Jersey was the subject of this demo for the cable show, Lonely Planet. The lovely and talented, Maureen Jende, hosted this magazine segment about the Raptor Center and the wonderous work done there by Dr. Leonard Soucy. One of the amazing things about
the Raptor Trust was that the whole time I was trying to direct and shoot this piece, part of me was so
fascinated by the tremendous work that is being done there to save these beautiful birds, that I wanted
to set down my camera and take the tour. These are great people and everyone should take a day trip to
the Raptor Trust and I promise you a fun day of learning. This was shot digitally and edited in Final Cut Pro HD. |

Harry Fini |
 |
Sensible Elegance was an exciting cooking show pilot which was
more than just about making food. Hosts Harry Fini and Amanda Peppendrille, took the viewer on a tour of
the various neighborhoods of Philadelphia where all the best markets are found. Hip and fast paced, with
incredible menus designed to fit a modest budget, this show was part site seeing, part
cuisine. We shot in Philadelphia on a two day schedule. The first day was all about shopping and the second day was cooking and serving the feast. After all the food was eaten, we had 3 days to edit. Not a bad deal. |

Fung Yee and Park Borchert
 |
 |
As an award winning director, I have to give credit where
credit is due. My lovely wife, Fung Yee Borchert, is not only the producer and marketing director of Doorstop
Productions, she is the real brains behind the operation. So when the going gets tough, Fung gets it going in the right direction, and then goes shoe shopping. We are the perfect mixture of Midwestern work ethic and Kung Fu magic. |
